Party above principle, party before peace
In April 1997 the U.S. Senate ratified (74-26) a treaty to ban chemical weapons.
Well-known supporters of the treaty, past and present:
- Ronald Reagan, former President
- George Bush, former President
- Bob Dole, former presidential candidate from Kansas
Voting in favor of this peaceful, bipartisan measure:
- all the Democrats
- about half the Republicans, including Kansas' Pat Roberts
Voting against:
- Sam
- Jesse Helms (North Carolina)
- Don Nickles (Oklahoma)
- a bunch of other right-wing Republicans
