What's wrong with my mechanical TA?

1. My TA will not pull on the low side: This is the most common problem. Chances are that the ramp and roller assembly inside the TA is bad.
Solution 1: Replace the ramp and roller assembly with another one or replace it with the new sprag clutch assembly.
Solution 2: Replace the complete TA unit with a rebuilt one.

2. My TA will not pull on the high side: Chances are that the TA clutch just ahead of the TA unit is bad. This is not to be confused with the engine clutch. The TA clutch is just ahead of the TA unit and is only about 6 inches in diameter. Otherwise it looks just like a regular clutch and pressure plate assembly.
Solution: Replace it with a new, rebuilt or used assembly.

3. My TA stays on the high side when the lever is pulled back and there is no speed difference in either lever position: Chances are that the TA clutch is not releasing. This usually means that the fingers on the TA pressure plate are bad or that rust has stuck the TA clutch disc to the TA pressure plate or TA clutch hub, or both.
Solution: same as #2.

4. My transmission is very hard to pull out of any gear: Chances are that the TA clutch is not releasing. It must release every time that the foot clutch is released. This is accomplished by the linkage on the side of the tractor that connects the engine clutch to the TA clutch.
Solution: Try adjusting the engine clutch linkage linkage and the TA clutch linkage according to the owners manual or a good shop manual. If this does not cure the problem then solution is the same as #2.
